Banking Sector of Nepal

Exclusive Interview with:
Manoj Kumar Gyawali
Head
Finance, Planning & CTO
Global Bank Limited

1. What role does a bank play in the economy of the country?
Bank are financial intermediaries of economy which help productive and industrial sector to avail financing facility. In Nepalese context, banks are the sources of revenue collection, i.e. out of top ten tax payer, 5 are banks. Being flourished sector, bank is providing better employment opportunity in the country. In this way bank helps economic growth by contributing in revenue and employment opportunities as well as  helping industrial and productive sector growth. So, Banks plays vital role in sustainable development of national economy. Banks are veins of economy from which money circulate as blood.

2. There are many banks (commercial & development) in present economy. What is your opinion on this?

Number of banks and financial institution are increasing in the economy but                           major chunk of population is out of reach from banking services. With increasing
number of banks and financial institutions, competition between banks and financial institutions has increased but economy and bank’s stakeholders are benefited with the growth. Government is getting higher tax revenue, youths and professionals are getting better employment within the country, customers are getting better service at lower rate, network of bank and financial institution is reaching to rural and remote area so I do not see any negative effect of increased number of bank and financial institution. It’s the subjective issue and even nobody can exactly say what is adequate number of banks and financial institutions so we have to talk about total reach and network of banking sector rather than the number of bank and financial institution.

3. There is rumor to "cap the salary of Chief Executive Officer(CEO)" of banks. Is this justifiable as banks performance is dependent upon CEO? Can banks find CEO working with less salary?

"Cap in the Salary of CEO" has been made like a political issue. In the open market price of professional service is determined by demand and supply. Regulator and even government agencies are talking about the cap. Salary of CEO is determined by BOD of the bank and clearly disclosed in the annual report of each bank & financial institution. There should be no interference of third party while the person giving service and taking service could agree at certain price in the open market. Banks are not being able to get CEO’s at the present level of Salary. Anybody can check the market so reducing salary will further increase the problem in the market.

4. Nepal Rastra Bank (NRB) has decided to provide LOI ( Letter of Intend ) to Commerce & Trust Bank, (upcoming bank ). With this decision, is NRB increasing completion in banking sector?

NRB has issued LOI to CT Bank and the bank is about to start the operation. I think, NRB is not increasing the competition, it’s the better market of

bank and financial institution which is increasing the competition, so we should always welcome fair competition in the market.

5. There is unproven news that Investment & Everest Bank are merging. Is the age of merging starting in Nepal?

This news in the market but not confirmed yet. The entire merger process is usually kept secret from the general public, and often from the majority of the employees at the involved companies until the merger is confirmed.
Merger is not related to age of economy but it’s  the need of corporations and economy. A merger is very similar to an acquisition or takeover, except that in the case of a merger existing stockholders of both companies involved retain a shared interest in the new corporation. By contrast, in an acquisition one company purchases a bulk of a second company's stock, creating an uneven balance of ownership in the new combined company. It’s always considered beneficial at the time of merger because cost- benefit and strategy analysis used to be made for merger decision.

6. What can normal people expect from the present banking sector of Nepal?
Better, every time, everywhere, hi-tech  and efficient banking financial service at lower rate.

7. What can be done to uplift the banking sector of Nepal as we can find many loopholes in banking sector?

Banking sector is considered as transparent sector because of prudent supervision and regulation of NRB. If we compare Banking sector with other corporation of country, this is the most regulated and transparent industry so I do not agree there are many loopholes in this sector. Establishment of institutions producing banking professionals, tax consideration for banking sector, more strong law for Bad Borrowers, separate court for banking cases, better law and order situation in the country can help banking sector to prosper further.

8. What role does "Nepal Bankers Association"(NBA) plays for the development of Banking Sector?

Bankers Association in Nepal is the common platform of the Banker in Nepal, where bankers meet and discuss in the issues of common benefits of banking sector. NBA is established to enhance the interrelationship and co-ordination among the commercial banks incorporated in Nepal in order to develop a fair and healthy competition among them. It’s the common platform to discuss about the policy and procedures of banking transactions. It helps to develop and adopt creative and modern technology to identify the problems and to implement the remedies associated with the business of the bank. So it is playing very positive role for bankers and banking industry in the country.

Admire Nepal...

Nepal, a must place to visit. Not saying this only because of I'm a Nepali.I can't stop myself saying that Nepal is the most beautiful country in the world.

From the deepest george(Kali Gandaki Gorge or Andha Galchi) to the highest mountain(Sagarmatha) Nepal has it all to be called the most beautiful country.Nepal is a country of highly diverse and rich geography, culture, and religions. The mountainous north contains eight of the world's ten highest mountains, including the highest, Mount Everest. The fertile and humid south is heavily urbanized. By some measures, Hinduism is practiced by a greater majority of Nepal than in any other nation.

Kali Gandaki Gorge
Mt. Everest
Nepal covers a span of 147,181 sq. kilometers ranging from altitude of 70 meters to 8848 meters. Mountains, mid hills, valleys and plains dominate the geography of landlocked Nepal that extends from the Himalayan range in the north to the Indo-Gangetic lowland in south.

Trekking is the most popular activity in Nepal and is the best way to experience the beauty of Himalayas. Most treks follow well-trodden foot trails that have been in use fot hundreds of years, connecting to mountain villages and hamlets.Popular treks include Annapurna Circuit, Everest base camp, Muktinath, Ghandruk-Ghorepani-Punhill.

Annapurna Circuit
Muktinath Temple
It’s not just adventurers who are drawn to this special place. Hundreds of shrines and temples in and around Kathmandu draw the devout of many faiths.

COLLEGE -- education or business

College !!! It means education. Its traditional meaning exist today???

I doubt so. Kathmandu, in current scenario college means strictly business. Educational sector has been commercialized. Is this right?? Indeed, a big question.

Half, the column of newspaper filled with college advertisement, these figures, below, are of no surprise. I  bet, take a walk, you will be surprised to see so many colleges.

Admission Open!! Admission Open!!
Everywhere, in this competition, are students benefited?? Investors, are earning good money. With infrastructures, new facilities, new courses, investors are luring students.

Government, has phase out PCL level making higher education difficult for the poor students. In average, Rs 1500 was enough for 1 whole year, at PCl. But, how those students can pay Rs 30,000 for +2, education for a single year

In this case, Government irresponsibility can be seen from its unjustified decision to phase out PCL. Government should realise its responsibility, and introduce a effective planning for the poor students as well, for their higher education after SLC.

In competition of colleges, quality education is being provided or not?? Authority must answer this question.

Telecommunication Giants......in Nepal

Nepal is growing in communication sector. We can see a notable growth in Telecommunication, for a few years now.

Although, it might not meet the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) targeted at increasing teledensity. But, comparing telcommunication with other infrastructure development, it is growing at a greater speed, gaining popularity and quality.

At present, Nepal's total teledensity stands at near 27 per cent while the MDG targets to achieve 55 per cent teledensity in its interim plan for the year, 2010-11. though, the country's teledensity stands at 18.5 per cent the lowest in the South Asia.

Ncell, part of TeliaSonera, the fifth largest telcommunication company in Europe, has 1.8 million subscribers in Nepal.

The net sale of the company is Rs 6.9 billion and investments of Rs 5.3 billion. The conpany is 2nd largest tax payer in Nepal that is at 3.2 Billion. As of March 12, 2010, Spice Nepal operates under the brand of Ncell, formerly known as Mero Mobile.

The days are not too far when we will be saying our children that earlier there used to be wild creature call "Tiger", and we will be filling much proud when we will be saying them that we saw it when we were at zoo, national park or some where else.

29th July , International day of Tiger was celebrated all over world, but the status of Tiger is declining. But here in Nepal we have got a good news ,in comparison of the number of tiger last year there is an increase by 34. Now there are 125 Tiger in Nepal known. Last year it was 91. From today the conservation area for tiger has been increased in Bardiya Conservation Area.

god of cricket..... Sachin Ramesh Tendulkar

If you think of cricket....?? What will first come in your mind...??I am sure it will be Sachin Tendulkar's name.
Ask a child playing cricket....which player will you want to be??? It will be again Sachin Tendulkar.

As the crowd erupted with unbridled joy, Tendulkar, tired but composed, took off his helmet, looked skyward, closed his eyes to offer a silent prayer.

The greatest accumulator of runs in the history of cricket, Tendulkar possesses nearly all major batting record even though he insisted he never chased milestones. His captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni came down from the strikers end to shake hands and hug him.

Over the past 12 months, though, Sachin has once again opened a yawning gap between himself and his contemporaries, and ensured that if at all any comparisons have to be made, they should be another Australian - Don Bradman, who was famously reminded of himself when watching Sachin bat.

Tendulkar, the world's leading run-getter, equalled West Indian Brian Lara's record of 19 scores of 150 plus. Australian legend Don Bradman did it on 18 occassions.
